How to write a good page title
Your page title is the text in the browser tab. Google often uses it as the headline of your result in search, and screen readers announce it when the page opens. A missing, very short or very long title gives people less information when they decide what to click.
Your report flags a title that is missing, under 30 characters or over 60 characters.
What your report means
- No title means the page has no title tag, or the tag is empty. Browsers usually show the address in the tab instead. Google writes a headline from other text on the page, and screen reader users hear no name for the page.
- A short title has room for more detail. You can add what the page offers, or your brand name.
- A long title often gets cut off with three dots, so people may not see the end of it.
How to write one
- Use 30 to 60 characters, counting everything in the title, including your site name.
- Say what the page offers. Put the most important words first, in case the end gets cut off.
- Add your brand at the end if it fits, for example
Durable widgets for workshops | Acme. - Give each page its own title. A title such as "Home" or "Welcome" tells people little.
- Write it for people. Google may replace a title that repeats the same words many times or does not match the page.
Where to change it
Menu names change over time, so look for the SEO settings if a name below differs.
- WordPress with Yoast: open the page in the editor and find the SEO title field in the Yoast panel.
- WordPress with Rank Math: open the Rank Math panel in the editor and press Edit Snippet.
- Shopify: open the product or page and edit its search engine listing section. The homepage title is in the Online Store preferences.
- Wix: open the page's SEO settings and edit the title.
- Squarespace: open the page settings and edit the SEO title. Blog posts and products may keep these fields elsewhere.
Without a plugin, WordPress usually builds the title from the page name and the site title.
On these platforms your theme or settings may add the site name to the title automatically. Check the browser tab after you save, because the extra characters count toward the 60.
If your site is custom built, ask your developer to set a different title on each page, inside the <head> section:
<title>Durable widgets for workshops | Acme</title>
How to check
- Open the page and read the browser tab.
- Press Rescan on your report to measure the new length.
- Search for your page on Google some days later. It can take time for Google to visit the page again, and it may still choose to show different words.
