How to set the title and text of shared links
Facebook, LinkedIn and Slack write a short preview of any link to your page. If you have not told it what to say, it may use the page title, or show very little. Your report lists any of these settings that are missing, so you can choose the words yourself.
These settings are called Open Graph tags. Each one is a line in your page's HTML, and visitors do not see them on the page.
What each tag does
A complete set looks like this:
<meta property="og:title" content="Waterproof walking boots">
<meta property="og:description" content="Light boots for wet trails, made in small batches.">
<meta property="og:url" content="https://example.com/boots">
<meta property="og:type" content="product">
<meta property="og:site_name" content="Acme Boots">
If og:title is missing, a platform may use your page title instead. If og:description is missing, it may use your page description, or show no text. The image has its own tag, covered in the share image guide.
How to write them
- For the title, say what the page is about. It can match your page title, or be written more for people browsing a feed.
- For the description, write one or two sentences. Long text may be cut, and each platform cuts at a different point.
- For the address, use the page's main address, with no tracking codes. Shares of different versions of the address may then count as one page.
- For the type, use
websitefor most pages.articleorproductsuit those pages. Use the value your platform offers if it picks one for you. - For the site name, use your brand name as people know it.
How to set them
Menu names change over time, so look for the social or SEO settings if a name below differs.
- WordPress with Yoast or Rank Math: open the page in the editor and find the Social tab in the plugin's panel. Enter the title and description there. These plugins can usually fill in the address, type and site name by themselves, so check that their social features are turned on.
- Shopify: many themes build these tags from each page's title and description. Edit the text in the page's search engine listing section.
- Wix: open the page's Social Share settings to change the title and description.
- Squarespace: the tags are built for you. Your page's title, description and social settings usually supply the text.
If a tag is still missing, ask your developer or host to add it to the page's <head> section. Each page should have its own title, description and address.
A theme and an SEO plugin can both write these tags. If you see the same tag twice in your page source, ask your developer to remove one.
How to check
- Press Rescan on your report and see whether the items have cleared.
- Share the link in a private message to yourself to see the preview.
- If an old preview appears, use Facebook's Sharing Debugger to make it read your page again. LinkedIn's Post Inspector may also help.
