How to get a large image card on X
A link on X can appear with a small square picture, or with a large image across the full width of the post. A setting in your page's HTML called twitter:card asks for one or the other. X's documentation lists this setting as required for a card, so your report flags it when it is missing or set to the small size.
What the setting does
The tag has two common values for ordinary pages:
summaryasks for the small card.summary_large_imageasks for the large card.
X can read the title, description and image from your Open Graph tags, so you may not need to enter them twice. The card type has no Open Graph version, which is why this tag needs setting by itself.
The large card still needs an image. If your report also lists a share image problem, the share image guide covers it. If a page has no wide image, the small card may suit it better, and you can leave the setting as it is.
How to fix it
Look for the social or X settings if a name below differs.
- WordPress with Yoast: Yoast usually adds the large card by default. If the tag is missing, check that its X card feature is turned on in the plugin settings.
- WordPress with Rank Math: open the Social tab in the plugin's panel, switch to the X or Twitter section and choose the summary card with large image. The site-wide default is in the plugin's global meta settings.
- Wix: look in the SEO settings for the X options, where you can choose the large card size.
- Shopify: many themes add this tag by themselves. Changing it means editing the theme's code, so this may be a job for your developer.
- Squarespace: the platform writes its own tags. Check its help pages for card options, or ask its support team.
If you or your developer can edit the page's HTML, add this line inside the <head> section:
<meta name="twitter:card" content="summary_large_image">
If the tag already exists with the value summary, change that value. Do not add a second tag, because the page would then have two different values.
See the card X shows
- Open your page in a browser and view its source. Search for
twitter:cardand read the value. - Rescan the page.
- Start a new post on X and paste your link. The preview shows the card X has for the page.
X may keep an old card for a while after you make a change. Wix says this can take up to a week on X. A post made after that should show the new card.
